Hub update Version 4.02r05

I’m assuming most of you already know there was a hub update in the morning of 9/2 and normally I would try to be one of the first to upgrade and post what’s new, but it seems the upgrade wasn’t available to me in the early morning and I finally just getting a chance to post this now after getting everyone to bed.

So what’s new with this version?

Well besides the general statement about performance enhancement and bug fixes. You should notice on the device page that there’s an extra “AO Smith Water Heater” listed as coming soon.

AO Smith InstallAO Smith Water Heater is the Wi-Fi device which will allow you to connect Iris to a line of energy smart electric water heater that are available since 2011. From playing with the setting under test drive mode on the iPhone, it seems you can set the water heater to the following three settings. Schedule, hold and the option for “Energy Smart” mode.

Glass Break and Water Shut-offI would really like to tell you when this water heater module is available for sale but I don’t have that information. However I can mention to you that the glass break sensor and water shut-off valve which were introduced from the last hub update will be for sale around October.

That’s it for now. If you notice something different about this hub update please feel free to comment on this post to let everyone else know. Thanks!

Beta testing tilt sensors by scunnyngham

I was given the opportunity to beta test the tilt sensor.

I received four of them. All four paired within seconds of initiating the add device procedure. The following are my observations of this product.

Size
I was amazed of the compact size of the product. It measures 1 1/8 H x 1 1/4 W x 3/8 depth. It is white in color and is almost unnoticeable mounted on my garage doors.

Mounting
It comes both with the adhesive tape and mounting screws. The base plate is pre drilled with 2 holes for using the screws. The package comes with 4 screws which is a good thing because even though I pre drilled the holes one of the screws twisted off during the installation. They are very small in diameter but more than adequate to hold the sensor in place.

20140601-000457-297092.jpg

Battery
It is powered by a CR 2032 3 volt battery.

Configuration
It can be configured as follows
Horizontal = open (for example when fitted to a garage door)
Vertical = open (for example when fitted to the lid of a box)
Play a chime when this tilt sensor is opened

Lowes has announced an asset protector and I’m not sure what the difference between this in the Vertical mode and the asset protector would be.

Magic
I tested it with the devices I have which include the smart plug, dimmer switch, wall switch and wall outlet. It controlled all as expected. It sent the text and email message notifications as defined. It appears and works as an alarm sensor just like any other sensor.

The sensor is zigbee and although mounted about 90 feet from the hub is reporting 100 signal strength. I have a magic rule to turn on my garage lights and they are on within 5 seconds of the door movement.

Overall I’m impressed with the product. I’ve been using contact sensors for the last 1.5 years to accomplish the same thing but I’ve always had problems with the alignment between the sensor and magnet and inconsistent results. This device is rock solid and performs the task for which it was intended 100% of the time.

If you need this type of sensor rest assured you can purchase it with confidence. It just works and works very well.

*******
Just like to thank scunnyngham for letting me post this here.

HBBugSo with all these news going around about the Heartbleed bug regarding SSL certification. I wanted to know how secure was irissmarthome.com.

So here’s what I’ve found when I used Qualys Scans which seems to have the most comprehensive scanning I’ve found online regarding SSL scans.

For those who doesn’t know, here are the current Iris account levels.

All Access Level

Account holder: This is the owner of the Iris system and has access to everything.

Read-write: Allow access to pretty much everything except for the account holder and contact information, but is allowed to change a contact messaging preference.

Read only: You can only have read access for the web and mobile interface except there are options to provide permission to set and cancel alarm and access to cameras.

PIN and Alerts Only: This account has no access to the web and mobile interface.

While discussing this with another Iris user who finds there are limitations to this where he’s can’t restrict his roommate access to his room lights while allowing control to everything else in the home.    Continue reading →

Glass Break Sensor close up from app

Glass Break Sensor2

In a post regarding the garage door controller, I’ve found that the company which manufactured the garage door controller had acquired a company called 2GIG. This was interesting to me because 2GIG has a whole product lineup of home automation devices. I had hoped Lowe’s would use this connection to expand on providing more options to the Iris platform like a touch screen control panel.

Besides reviewing how the irrigation function will work, you can also see how simple the pet door interface is, and a few new control options.

The most interesting part about this test drive is the “Service Status” page.
