I purchased the Iris outdoor camera just to see how it will register to the Iris hub. I’m still not sure where I’ll be installing it from the outside because it looks like you need to drill a hole to the inside of your house to plug in for power.

So here’s what the box look like.

Thanks to a John Moore who left a comment on another post that the Iris outdoor camera for sale on Lowe.com by putting the search term “Iris camera” and you’ll find 3 results.

Iris outdoor cameara

It’s odd that it’s not part of the Iris product listing on lowes.com/iris, and I don’t see this camera when adding a new device in Iris.

I was able to purchases this online so hopefully I’ll let you know if this will work.

While trying to get the indoor camera to work for Iris I’ve notice that it has a memory cards slot, but when reviewing the manual it state that “The memory card slot is not used with the Iris service and is disabled for all installations.” Kind of thought it’s funny why someone design a camera with memory card slot and not use it. It feels like it’s not designed by Lowe’s or even alertme.com

So I did a search on the model number “RC8221” and found that it’s created by a company called Sercomm. I found that they have two websites. For the US it’s sercomm.com while the Japanese one is sercomm.co.jp

The product display page below is from the Japanese site.

While the Sercomm US site has the Camera PDF with the camera specifications and also shows some additional products.

Iris Camera

I finally installed the Iris camera but it wasn’t a smooth ride getting there.

Actually at this time I can’t really even use the camera because my primary connection for my Iris hub is the Cellular USB modem. To use the camera you need to have the hub on a broadband connection which at this time for me it would still randomly disconnect. I though it just might work because you can set the camera as a wireless device by configuring to your Wi-Fi network. Well I tried and I was wrong.

For the last two days I’ve been able to successfully getting the camera to work when it was connected to my router but when trying to reconfigure over wireless all I got these errors most of the time.

Issue loading stream

It was pretty frustrating when I had to reset the camera many times. I think I’ve gotten the reason why but still running some test. I may post up what I needed to do for this to work tomorrow.

**Update 7/31/2013**
I’ve made a post called “Resolving my Iris Camera wireless issue.“

Seven security tips I’ve learned after using Lowe’s Iris

This is what I’ve learned after having the Lowe’s Iris system for a few months.

Iris Hub and box

  1. You need to arm the alarm for the system to work – This may sound obvious but its harder then you may think. Relying to turn on and off from the iPhone app just doesn’t work for me because my phone is too busy with notifications and other apps to distract me. What helps is to have a visual trigger like the Keypad on the door right before leaving the house and another one in the bed room right before shutting the lights out and falling a sleep. I had to learn the hard way when my nephew’s bike was stolen from the garage. Even with the Keypads sometimes we may rush out without turning on the alarm which is why I’ve also setup Iris to enable the alarm if all Key fobs are not in range. Hopefully I’m not that absent minded to forget my keys and leave the door unlocked.
  2. Have your local police and fire department’s number – If traveling out of town is often on your calendar, then you need to keep your local authority phone number on your cell phone. Remember calling 911 from where you are will not reach to your local 911 dispatchers. Yes you may call your neighbors but they might not be there and it will also delay the process of contacting the police. I also like my neighbors so I wouldn’t want to risk their lives to deal with a dangerous situation when they are not trained to do so. Unless your neighbor is a police officer, then you may want to discuss with them your plans.  Continue reading →

What products will Lowe’s Iris integrate in the future?

I’ve recently replied to a comment that what helped me decided to use Lowe’s Iris system was the future scalability. I believe Lowe’s has the leverage to bring more vendors to integrate with Iris and set a price point where is accessible to the average consumer. Below is a list of what I’ve found that’s is coming in the future.

Smoke detector (Youtube Video at 1:05)

Smoke Detector

From the video it does look like it’s made from First Alert and from the way it looks like I’m guessing it’s the model SA511CN2-3ST.

Irrigation timer -Landscape Light Controller – Hose Tap Timer

These three components are from Orbit and this is what I had found.

1) Irrigation timer – It has to be one of the following on Orbit’s product page.
2) Landscape Light Controller – I can’t find this, but it looks like their irrigation timer refitted to be used for light control.
3) Hose-Tap Timer – This seems to be similar to the part Orbit calls “1 Dial Hose Faucet Timer“.

Stolen BikeThis is the bastard that had went to our garage and stole my nephew’s bike!

I wish I had a closer view of this guys face.

Too bad I didn’t arm the alarm last night. I was too tired after trying to get the kids to bed and forgot to set the alarm to partial. It would have scared off this guy at least because I had a sensor at the garage door. 😦
