HBBugSo with all these news going around about the Heartbleed bug regarding SSL certification. I wanted to know how secure was irissmarthome.com.

So here’s what I’ve found when I used Qualys Scans which seems to have the most comprehensive scanning I’ve found online regarding SSL scans.

For those who doesn’t know, here are the current Iris account levels.

All Access Level

Account holder: This is the owner of the Iris system and has access to everything.

Read-write: Allow access to pretty much everything except for the account holder and contact information, but is allowed to change a contact messaging preference.

Read only: You can only have read access for the web and mobile interface except there are options to provide permission to set and cancel alarm and access to cameras.

PIN and Alerts Only: This account has no access to the web and mobile interface.

While discussing this with another Iris user who finds there are limitations to this where he’s can’t restrict his roommate access to his room lights while allowing control to everything else in the home.    Continue reading →

Thanks to reader fmollenkopf who had found you can see the part number when they flipped over the Garage Door sensor on the youtube video. From there anybody can track it down to a company in Vancouver Canada called NYCE Control.

NYCE-Products

If you like to know more about the two devices that’s should be coming to Lowe’s Iris one day. Then you can check out the links because they provide a lot of specs regarding both products.

I’m not a huge fan of door locks with keypads on them. To me it just doesn’t feel safe. Well not yet anyway. Maybe I’ll try it one day.

Which brings me to the point that I never notice when the Kwikset locks were supported. I always thought Schlage locks where the only door/deadbolt supported for Iris but after searching lowes.com I had found the Kwikset – IRIS Compatible page.

KwiksetPage

Finding this page make me wonder when will Lowes.com ever make a simple list view of all the products supported for Iris. I guess I should start making one.

Also I’ve received a few request for listing unsupported products which also works with Iris but I only have a few in mind to try out. So if you know of anyone who has installed an unsupported Iris product please put a comment below and I’ll give it a shot and if there enough number of unsupported Iris products that works then I’ll also start building a list for that too.

I purchased the Iris outdoor camera just to see how it will register to the Iris hub. I’m still not sure where I’ll be installing it from the outside because it looks like you need to drill a hole to the inside of your house to plug in for power.

So here’s what the box look like.

If you have decided to use FreedomPop Burst as their primary connection for your Lowe’s Iris hub, then please make sure to secure the hub by changing it’s SSID and network password.

I’ve found the following page regarding “How do I access the Hub Burst’s Device Utility to change the SSID and network password?”

Continuing off from the secret mission I was trying to create a silent operation with no sound on the hub or cause any noise when triggered.

First I had to shut off anything that will trigger any sounds by going to the “Alarm Overview” and select “no” for the following items highlighted below in the screen shot.

Alarm Overview no sound

To get to this screen you need to be on the “home” tab and select the “alarm” section.

Alarm-Setting1

Then click on “Alarm Configuration”

Alarm-Setting2

I had also needed to quiet the hub too but the only option when reviewing the hub setting is only “1 – Very quiet”.

Hub Quiet

So now my only option is to open up the hub and disconnect the speaker.

These are the steps I needed to perform to unplug the speaker. Continue reading →

top-secretI’ve been giving a secret mission to figure out a security breach in an office setting. I’m not going to give all the details like people’s name, company and place, but will provide what are my goals and challenges are for this project.

Summary: This is a small office setting where things has been gone missing. Only a few key people in the office knows that this has been an ongoing issue and like to find out who’s doing this. There is an assumption that it’s done by someone on the inside. There’s also an assumption that there might be a hidden camera because how quickly the burglar is able to find very specific items with out disturbing the surrounding area, so basically there’s no sign of someone searching for valuables.  Continue reading →
